Everything starts with literacy. Our Impact Starts With YOU!

We had an incredible year of expansion, growing our programs with new locations. Our students and tutors were busy working together and building reading skills. We are also extremely excited to be celebrating 25 years of sharing the joy and power of reading! Read all about successful winter, our amazing donor spotlight about Doug Hausladen, and more in our Winter 2025 Newsletter below.

When and why did you first start volunteering with NHR?
I started volunteering this past summer because I love to teach and couldn’t think of a more important skill to help teach than reading, which is such a fundamental and important skill in all areas of life. I also love to be around kids, and New Haven Reads is a great place to meet some amazing kids.
What keeps you coming back?
I think seeing the progress made by my students and their willingness to learn keeps me coming back. It is amazing to see how bright the students are and how quickly they pick things up. I also love the enthusiasm for reading that my students possess. Caleb immediately grabs a book when he arrives, even before our session starts, and immediately begins reading. He even sometimes wants to use part of choice time to read! Both of my students are also incredible at games-I thought I was a good chess player until I played Mathias!
What is your favorite book? As a child and now?
As a child, my favorite books were the Magic Tree House series. I loved how they transported you across time to every corner of the world and allowed learning history to feel like an adventure! Now, my favorite book is Moneyball by Michael Lewis, which details how a baseball team used statistics to build a winning team despite not having the resources of other teams. I love math and sports, and this book was a great way to see how the two can come together.

Big change starts with small action. If you are looking to make a difference in the world, the best place to begin is right here, in our very own community. Help us make New Haven a better place for our children.

We recently made a delivery of books to Seth G. Haley Elementary School in West Haven. We delivered to three classrooms where each student received 2-3 gently used books. The classroom teachers also received 2 brand new books for their classroom library. We love seeing the excitement of the students and a few students opening the box of books immediately!

Our Book Bridge Program is currently full, but we have a waitlist opportunity for the spring.

If you are interested in being added to our waitlist, please fill out this form.

Lots of people are asking us about how New Haven Reads is coping in this uncertain funding environment.

Because of the tremendous need for our literacy programs, we are deeply committed to providing this important work for our students. With your support, we can do so.

Like many nonprofits, New Haven Reads is preparing for the possibility of budget cuts due to the uncertain funding environment. These cuts could reduce the breadth of our services at a time when need and demand are increasing.

At New Haven Reads, we are committed to providing free literacy tutoring to children, but we can’t do it alone. We invite you to stand as a partner with us in this mission.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Support Us: Your donations make a difference!
  • Volunteer: Become a tutor to have a personal impact.
  • Donate Books: Help us build home libraries.
  • Spread the Word: Share our mission with your network.

Because of your dedication and generosity, New Haven Reads has served over 10,000 children and distributed 2.8 million books in the past 25 years.

Thank you for partnering with us now and into the future to build the next generation of readers.

Our students at Bishop Woods celebrated their reading challenge with a Wig Bash! The students were recognized for all their hard work this year. Everyone enjoyed awards, games and cake. We loved having our students, tutors, families and staff come together for an afternoon of literacy celebration. Our students work hard all year and we are happy to be able to acknowledge their work and celebrate them. What a fun way to celebrate!
