Second grader, Domenico, is brand new to NHR. He is excited to meet new people, kind and always has a smile on his face. He tried his best with his workbook placement, brow furrowed in concentration. His literacy level is extremely low – he doesn’t know the difference between letter names and letter sounds. He is not the only student for whom the alphabet is an area of growth in the aftermath of the pandemic. Domenico is eager to learn and grow. He loves the color red so our site team has found red smiley stickers to help motivate him and even red books to read! We are excited to helping him on his reading journey.

NHR is needed now more than ever. Our waitlist has over 100 names and continues to grow with students just like Domenico and your gift means we can help more students achieve their potential.

We had a record-breaking Great Give and raised $20,590 in donations before any matches and prizes!

In 2022, we will continue to:

  • provide our one-on-one tutoring and literacy programs
  • serve our Kindergarten students and we will expand this program to serve more children
  • distribute thousands of books at food pantries and through partner organizations
  • support our families with technology and internet access.

Our students and our community need New Haven Reads now more than ever. “The lost school year” is how many people are describing 2020.  Many students are falling behind in their schoolwork, and for those already working below grade level, this loss is especially devastating.
