Aspire to Lead Internship

Our Mission:

Founded to share the joy and power of reading, New Haven Reads partners with the community to provide free 1-on-1 tutoring, educational family support, and a book bank to empower aspiring readers to master the literacy skills needed to thrive in school and life.

New Haven Reads “Aspire to Lead” Internship

Have an interest in helping and supporting the children of our community? New Haven Reads is offering an internship to connect High School Students to their inner community leaders. Come learn how to teach kids to read by gaining hands-on experience in literacy tutoring and receiving training on topics such as Social Emotional Learning, the Science of Reading and teaching strategies.

  • One-on-one tutoring (at least 4 hours per week)
  • Appropriate orientation and training are provided
  • Must be 15 or older
  • Must be a New Haven Resident
  • This is an unpaid internship

Duties and Responsibilities for interns:

  • One-on-one tutoring of students ages 6 through 18 (primarily in reading)
  • Sorting and packing books for our Book Bank when not tutoring
  • Working on special projects assigned by Site Director

*Projects include finding individualized worksheets for students, creating educational games and supporting Site Staff with completing notes regarding student’s next steps

Training:

Interns will receive training in our tutoring model, SEL and Teaching strategies. Trainings will be provided weekly throughout the summer and then once a month during the school year.
Timing:
Candidates must be able to tutor at least 4 hours and up to 6 hours per week after school during
the school year. Summer hours can be extended up to 8 hours per week.
