Guest Speaker: Stella Betts & David Leven, LEVENBETTS

Topic: “Three Ways of Looking at the Free Library”

LEVENBETTS is an award winning New York City based architecture practice founded by David  Leven and Stella Betts in 1997. The practice focuses on design at a range of scales including  urban design, public architecture, houses and housing, commercial workspaces, exhibitions and  furniture.  

LEVENBETTS work has been recognized nationally and internationally through awards, exhibitions  and publications. The office has won eleven New York City AIA awards and is currently working on  its fifth New York City public library, a 300,000 square foot Life Sciences Laboratory Building, a  museum exhibition for a house prototype and a series of pavilions and residential projects.  

LEVENBETTS has been published widely most notably in a monograph on the first ten years of the  firm’s practice, called Pattern Recognition, and is currently working on a publication that locates  thirteen of the firm’s residential projects within the current discourse on the architecture of the  house. 

David and Stella have taught at both the undergraduate and the graduate level. David is  an associate professor at Parsons School of Design and has taught previously at Cornell University  School of Art Architecture and Planning, City College and Syracuse University School of  Architecture. David received a Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University and a Master of  Architecture from Yale University School of Architecture. David also studied at the Institute for  Architecture and Urban Studies in New York. Stella currently teaches at Yale University School of  Architecture and Cornell University School of Art Architecture and Planning. She has taught  previously at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation,  Cooper Union and Syracuse University School of Architecture. Stella received a Bachelor of Arts  from Connecticut College and a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design. 

David serves on the Board of Directors of the New York AIA Chapter as Vice President on the  Executive Committee for Professional Development. Stella serves on the Board of Directors of the  New York Architectural League.
