Jonathan’s parents first brought him to New Haven Reads because he was struggling with reading and they couldn’t help — though they speak a little bit of English, they are native Spanish speakers and don’t know how to read in English. Jonathan now comes to New Haven Reads twice a week for tutoring, and over the course of his time here has progressed four grade reading levels!
What is your favorite part of tutoring?
My favorite part of tutoring is when I get to have fun with the tutors, because they’re really nice.
What have you learned from New Haven Reads?
A lot of stuff. When I need help, they really do help me.
What’s your favorite memory at New Haven Reads?
Every time I finish a workbook. I’m almost done with the 8th one.
What would you tell other people about New Haven Reads?
It’s a nice place to learn, they help you with your homework, you have fun at the end, and the tutors are very kind. It’s a really good place.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is probably The Skin I’m In. It’s about a girl who goes to school, but it’s not a very good school — she gets bullied a lot for her skin, and she doesn’t have very much money. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but in one chapter her friend Char, who bullies her but somehow gained Maleeka’s [the main character] trust, sets the teacher’s room on fire, because Char had bad grades. And she ripped a hole in the top of the P.E. teacher’s car and hot glue gunned it. It’s a good book, and at the end it’s happy, but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone who’s going to read this.
And what are you reading right now?
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School. It’s a pretty good story…I’ve read it so many times.
Fill in the blank: New Haven Reads is…
Awesome.
