Bobbi H, Alumna

Bobbi first came to the New Haven Reads tutoring program as an elementary school student who was struggling with reading, and graduated from our program before middle school.

In high school, faced with the prospect of applying to college, Bobbi asked NHR for help again. Our staff matched Bobbi with two longtime NHR tutors, Dorothy and Will, and a dynamic team was born! Dorothy and Will assisted Bobbi with school work and supported her college application process, helping her graduate from high school with a 4.1 GPA and gain admittance to eight colleges!

Throughout her college application process, unbeknownst to her tutors or mother, Bobbi took what she was learning at New Haven Reads and used it to support her friends with their college applications. She shared what she learned about essay writing, helped them workshop their essays, and encouraged them to keep rewriting until they got it just right – just as Dorothy and Will had taught her. All of the friends Bobbi helped began attending college this fall, and Bobbi herself started at the University of Connecticut.
