The Literacy and Math Tutoring Initiative is a city-wide effort to improve literacy and math skills in students from all across New Haven. United Way and New Haven Reads (NHR) have been awarded the opportunity of supporting participating after school organizations that wish to provide the literacy tutoring to their children in a two-year initiative. NHR will help recruit tutors, provide literacy training to staff and tutors in a train the trainer model, and provide weekly support to those organizations through visits by the Literacy Instructors. There will also be community literacy events and book giveaways for children. The Literacy Tutoring Initiative will run throughout the city over a two-year period starting in June of 2023.

Job Description: Literacy Instructors – 2 needed

Location:  New Haven Reads, New Haven, CT 06511
Non-Exempt – Part time – $20- $36/hour based on experience and certification
Job Reports To:  Literacy Initiative Director (LID)
Job Summary:  The Literacy Instructors (LI) will support staff and students at select participating after school organizations in effectively implementing a specific literacy tutoring model at their site.  The LI will assess students, ensure fidelity to the program and model instruction when needed

A pilot program in the summer of 2023 will enable NHR to offer training support to three or four after school programs at up to 10 sites.  The tutoring initiative will expand in the school year of 2023-24, enabling additional after school programs to join this tutoring initiative.  Literacy Instructors, under the direction of the Literacy Initiative Director, will visit each site weekly to support the staff of participating organizations, to ensure fidelity to the model, to assess students, and review data. The Literacy Instructors will track data on students from participating organizations and input it in the NHR data management system (Salesforce).

Major Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Visit select participating organizations weekly to monitor and support literacy instruction
  • Provide supportive feedback and direction to the organizations’ instructors
  • Problem solve with the organizations’ instructors to ensure program fidelity and effectiveness in meeting various student needs
  • Oversee appropriate maintenance of records of students in participating organizations, including attendance, test scores, books read etc.

Requirements:

  • College graduate
  • At least one year of experience working with children in an education setting
  • Knowledge in Reading development and the Science of Reading
  • Can gather, organize, analyze and reflect on student data
  • Experience in Microsoft Word and Excel,
  • Experience with or ability to learn Salesforce (Data Management System)

Preferred:

  • College degree in education related field, a teaching certificate
  • Classroom experience
  • Strong conversational skills in Spanish

Remote work and in office meetings.
5-10 hours/weekly

Job Description: Literacy Initiative Director

Job Reports To:  Executive Director
Job Summary:  The Literacy Initiative Director (LID) will lead all aspects of New Haven Read’s role as Lead Literacy Organization as part of the Literacy and Math Tutoring Initiative.

The Literacy Initiative Director will oversee the successful implementation of the after school literacy tutoring program modeled after New Haven Reads existing tutoring program.  LID will provide programmatic oversight for the literacy tutoring in areas of program implementation, training of staff and tutors from participating organizations, oversight and scheduling of literacy instructors, evaluation and tweaking of the program, qualitative and quantitative reporting, and communication. This person will support development of the literacy tutoring initiative in participating after school programs throughout the city over a two-year period starting in June of 2023.

The Literacy Instructors will track data on students from participating organizations and input it in the NHR data management system (Salesforce).  The LID will be responsible for creating reports, both qualitative and quantitative.

Major Responsibilities/Activities:

  1. Reviews and updates the training materials as needed, in collaboration with Education Director and Assistant Education Director
  2. Coordinates the training for all participating organizations
  3. Manages the hiring, training, responsibilities and scheduling of the Literacy Instructors
  4. Supports, guides and supervises Literacy Instructors
  5. Oversees appropriate maintenance of records of students in participating organizations, including attendance, test scores, books read etc.
  6. Responsible for ensuring the fidelity of the program with oversight and support provided by Literacy Instructors
  7. Monitors instructional plans in conjunction with Literacy Instructors for each student in order to help all students achieve proficiency in reading
  8. Communicates effectively with participating organizations, Literacy Instructors, and other Literacy Initiative partners
  9. Grows the number of afterschool partners to advance impact of Tutoring Initiative
  10. Communicates with our network of partners, the City, and Alders, the press
  11. Annually develops data report with appropriate data analysis and meaningful analysis

Requirements:

  • College graduate
  • Three years of experience working with children in an education setting in a leadership role
  • Experience in project management
  • Three years of experience managing an education program with literacy components
  • Knowledge in Science of Reading and implementation of literacy programs
  • Experience in Microsoft Word and Excel, comfort in statistics
  • Experience with or ability to learn Salesforce (Data Management System)

Preferred:

  • College degree in education related field, a teaching certificate
  • Classroom experience
  • Strong conversational skills in Spanish

Hybrid work- location based on operational needs.
