Volunteer Spotlight: Jodi Lowe

Welcome to our  Volunteer Spotlight series! Throughout the year, New Haven Reads will highlight some of our spectacular volunteers. Read on to learn more about one of our Science Park tutors, Jodi Lowe.

Jodi moved to the United States from Canada when she was¬† in about 6th grade. She is currently a senior at Hamden High School and in the process of applying to college. When asked about what she likes to do in her free time, Jodi offered, “My favorite things to do are play piano and Field Hockey”. Jodi volunteers four hours a week at Science Park, and I stopped by today to chat with her and Isaiah, a student she has been working with for about one month. Isaiah likes to work with Jodi on Lexia, his workbook and reading. He also likes to play dominoes at the end of the hour with her.

When did you first begin tutoring at New Haven Reads?
I first began tutoring at New Haven Reads in the summer of 2013.

What made you want to become a tutor?
What made me want to become a tutor was wanting to make a difference in children’s lives by helping them improve in their reading and writing skills. When I first moved to the United States I had trouble academically, and because of my personal struggle I want to help others who struggle as well.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering at New Haven Reads?
My favorite thing about New Haven Reads is seeing how excited the kids are once they accomplish a goal they’ve set for themselves.

What keeps you coming back?
What keeps me coming back is the kids. I love seeing how my help has impacted someone in their ability to learn.

Do you have a fun fact about yourself you would like to share?
I speak French.

Thank you to Jodi and all of our wonderful tutors!
