Tuesday Tips: Open-Ended Questions

This is a great tip for encouraging oral language skill development, imagination, and thinking! When talking with your student try to use open-ended questions. Open-ended questions allow students to answer beyond ‘yes’ and ‘no’. These types of questions are great for discussing the books you read together.

Here’s a handy guide for asking open-ended questions:

Open-ended questions often begin with:
• what
• how
• who
• why

Try to avoid using too many closed-ended questions. Closed-ended questions often begin with:

• Did you …?
• When …?
• Do you want to …?
• Will you …?
• Have you …?
