Through our Summer Literacy Camp for rising kindergarteners and first graders, New Haven Reads helps students gain confidence and enhance their skills during the summer months, when there is a risk of academic learning loss due to the long vacation. In the summer of 2013 we served 35 enrolled campers, five days a week.
Taught by four certified teachers, this five-week-long program uses storytelling, poetry, songs, and hands-on materials to expand the reading and language skills of our campers. Our youngest learners also go on field trips to the Peabody Museum and the Yale Art Gallery. As with all other New Haven Reads programs, the Summer Literacy Camp is free of charge for families.
