Frequently asked questions

How do your students hear about the tutoring program?
Mostly word of mouth. Some teachers refer students; some people come in to get books, see the tutoring going on, and ask about it.

How do I get my child in the tutoring program?
Come in and fill out a registration form. You can also call and give us the information over the phone. We will put your child on the waiting list and you will receive a phone call when there is a space for your child.

How long is the waiting list for tutoring?
We currently have over 100 students on the waiting list. The wait is approximately 3-9 months.

What can my child participate in while he/she is waiting for a spot in the tutoring program?

Students who are on the waiting list and have access to the internet can begin our phonics-based computer program called Lexia. Just asked to be assigned a user name and for instructions on how to log-in at home. Of course, our book bank is always a valuable source for books for readers of  all ages and reading levels.

How do I become a tutor?
Call our Outreach Coordinator, Keri Humphries, at 203-752-1923 or e-mail her at volunteer@newhavenreads.org. You can also come by and fill out a volunteer form! (We ask each volunteer tutor to commit to one hour per week.) Or you can fill out our form online.

How do I volunteer to help with the Book Bank?

Who funds New Haven Reads?
All New Haven Reads programs depend upon private donations, grants and in-kind support. All our programs are free of charge for our participants. We are fortunate to have space and utilities donated by Yale University and the Science Park Development Corporation.

Where do your books come from?
Our books are donated by individuals or community groups. Some books come from the leftovers of library sales.

What kind of books do you accept?
We take any books in good to excellent condition, but we do not take any encyclopedias or magazines. We are always in need of children’s picture books!

How do I obtain books for my organization or event?

How do I donate books?
All you have to do is bring your books to the Book Bank during our open hours (Monday-Friday 1-6pm, and Saturday 10am – 2pm).
