New Haven Reads was founded by Christine Alexander. Our mission is:
New Haven Reads, founded to “share the joy and power of reading,” increases the literacy skills of children to empower their academic success by providing individually tailored one-on-one after-school tutoring, educational family support, and a community book bank, all at no cost to participants.
Since 2001, New Haven Reads has grown from a powerful idea to a thriving center of literacy located in the Dixwell neighborhood of New Haven. Now working from three locations, we have doubled our physical size and the number of students and groups we serve.
We have a talented and highly qualified staff at New Haven Reads. Our employees have extensive experience in education, management, and community development and share a passion for literacy and supporting the students in our community as they work to becoming skilled and confident readers. Volunteers are the soul of our organization. We now proudly count over 350 volunteers as part of our growing team. Volunteers work in the tutoring programs, in the Book Bank and in Book Distribution.
Board of Directors
In 2005 we incorporated and formed our first Board of Directors. The all-volunteer board is responsible for setting policy and ensuring the organization’s financial stability.
