At the end of my freshman year at Howard University, I came home with the attitude that I want to do something to help serve my community. When the opportunity to join the welcoming New Haven Reads family, I knew I had to embrace it and excel. During my high school years, my Mom would come home from volunteering as a tutor for NHR. She would come home elated, albeit a little tired, but I’ll never forget the warm energy I felt as she recounted her day with her student. After 3 weeks as an intern I now have experienced that connection first hand. We share information and helpful tips on tutoring effectively.

One student that has really impacted me during my time with New Haven Reads is Nahzir Ivory. Not only do we share the same name, but we have many other similarities including our love for sports, Hamburger Helper, and superheroes. On the first day when he came to tutoring, he was kind of “on empty”, not really wanting to be there at the time. By the end of our session he was genuinely excited to come back. Now every time he sees me, he greets me with an excited high five – ready to tackle his tasks for the day. That feeling is something that I’ll cherish and use as a driving force to continue helping the youth in my community.

I love waking up in the morning and knowing that I have the responsibility to help shape and cultivate the young minds of tomorrow’s leaders and that there is a kid out there who is excited to come and take advantage of the opportunities New Haven Reads has to offer.

I’d like to thank First Niagara Bank for providing me with this amazing opportunity to play an active role in serving my community. I’m very excited for these next few weeks and extremely grateful for your consideration.  I am now able to help my Mom (a little) with my college tuition and will be a step closer to achieving my goals.

Naszir is an intern at New Haven Reads for the summer session thanks to a generous grant from the First Niagara Foundation
