I  started tutoring for the first time at New Haven Reads this summer. I heard so many great stories from classmates who work here and I wanted a chance to experience it for myself. Initially,I thought all I would be doing was tutoring. When I got the position I learned I would be tutoring as well as leading clubs for the summer. It has been a wonderful experience; in my math club I get to help children who need extra help and when they are having a hard time and then I help them and the light bulb goes off it makes my whole day. In my puzzles and strategies group I have students who have never completed a puzzle before or who may struggle with strategies and it’s the best feeling being the leader and seeing students finish their puzzles and how excited it makes them.

There is a student in my math club who comes in every day very shy, doesn’t want to talk and gets very discouraged when he messes up. The first day of my club I made myself a goal: to get him to open up and start enjoying math. I never thought that day two of my club I would be able to get a smile out of him and a comment of him saying “ I really enjoy these types of worksheets.” Knowing that he was opening up and was enjoying the work I was giving him made me so happy. The comment and expression gave me lots of encouragement.

I want to thank New Haven Reads and the First Niagara Bank Foundation for giving me the opportunity to experience what my classmates have told me so much about. I love everything about this place, the people who work here, the children and especially the mission of this organization. This internship has inspired me so much that after this summer I want to find a job that allows me to continue to make a positive impact on other children in New Haven.

Thank you to the First Niagara Foundation in partnership with KeyBank for generously funding six college-age interns at New Haven Reads this summer.
