Favorite Childhood Book: Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

I started tutoring for New Haven Reads my junior year of high school and loved it. Being able to intern this summer has not only allowed me to continue working with the kids I grew to adore, but has given me an opportunity to be a part of the staff and become more involved in the organization.

Working one on one with students and getting to watch them succeed and improve has always been my favorite part of tutoring. It’s such a good feeling when a student gets comfortable with you and you can share in their achievements. One of the students in my math club this summer came in during subtraction week so discouraged because she thought she didn’t know how to do the problems on her worksheet. After working with her on the first couple problems and showing her what method to use, she tried the next problem on her own. Her smile was so big when I told her she got it right!

I want to thank First Niagara Foundation and New Haven Reads for giving me the chance to be an intern this summer. It has been amazing to volunteer, and now work for New Haven Reads knowing how important this place is to the kids in the community. Coming in every day and seeing the impact we make on the students’ academic growth is so meaningful and it’s been wonderful to be a part of.

Thank you to the First Niagara Foundation in partnership with KeyBank for generously funding six college-age interns at New Haven Reads this summer.
