Favorite Childhood Book: Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

“Come on, let’s try to focus together. How about this book?” The student I was working with had a difficult time paying attention that day. I picked out There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy and suddenly everything clicked. He and I were laughing about the absurdity of swallowing a fly, a cat, a dog, and a horse, and he even started making up his own song!

I have loved seeing the laughing and learning at New Haven Reads this summer. Looking for a summer job, I was overjoyed to receive an email about the application and then to be selected as an intern. I am so fortunate to have found a space where I can learn and grow, right along with the students.

Working both in one-on-one tutoring sessions and in clubs every day, I have interacted and developed strong relationships with many students at the Dixwell site. I also have had the privilege of working with so many inspiring, determined staff members at New Haven Reads, an organization filled with people that want to make a difference.

Being here, I have learned essential people and life skills, ones which I know I will use on my college and career journey. I have learned about the paperwork and planning: the cogs of the wheel that allow a nonprofit to run smoothly. I have learned to balance my students’ academic and personal needs—sometimes it is okay to put down the book and talk. Most of the time, though, we have to focus on the task at hand: how do we find motivation even on our “off days?”

Overall, I could not have asked for a better summer job preceding my first semester of college. Thank you, First Niagara. This place has been a catalyst for me to grow, learn about the world around me, and to learn about myself. I know I will use what I have gained to help make a positive impact on our world.

Thank you to the First Niagara Foundation in partnership with KeyBank for generously funding six college-age interns at New Haven Reads this summer.
