Tutor Pair Alejandro and John“Without New Haven Reads, I can’t imagine what would have happened to her!” declares tutor, Jessica, referring to her student with whom she has worked for the last six years.

“Callie was the kind of kid who could fall through the cracks. She is quite shy and back then, she couldn’t read at all. She worked very hard over the years and now she is doing remarkably well. She is receiving good grades and even reads for pleasure. New Haven Reads has made an enormous difference!”

Callie’s grandmother could not be happier. She adds, “Reads is really good for students who have trouble learning. It’s one-on-one; they need that. It helps them so that they’re not embarrassed that they can’t read. It really helped Callie a lot!”       (Names have been changed to protect confidentiality)

Callie’s story is similar to that of many of our students. With your support, we can provide a caring environment and a highly effective program that supports over 500 students in their journey to becoming skilled and confident readers.

Our benchmark testing last year showed that 99 percent of students tested in the fall and spring – all first, second and third graders – increased their literacy scores. Two thirds increased their grade level in their independent reading level. To sustain this effort, we need your help.

New Haven Reads makes an enduring impact on a child’s life. All of our literacy programs are free of charge, so your generous support is vital. We have reduced our waiting list, yet it still hovers at around 120 students. With your investment, you will profoundly impact a child’s trajectory in life.

As we look ahead to the challenges our students face on the road to academic – and life – success, we need your support more than ever. Please consider making a tax-deductible, financial contribution to ensure that New Haven Reads can serve even more children like Callie.
