A Fond Farewell

It is with a great deal of mixed emotions that I share with all of you that I will be leaving New Haven Reads at the end of August. As some of you know, my husband and I are originally from California. We had planned to retire and return to family and friends on the West Coast, however, a career opportunity opened up for my husband in Southern California sooner than anticipated. After much prayer and consideration, we have made the decision to move.

I have been with New Haven Reads since 2008, and I have had the privilege of working alongside both Chris Alexander, the founder, and Kirsten Levinsohn, the current Executive Director. Through the dedicated work of amazing staff members, volunteers, and community supporters, the hope of becoming an organization that deeply impacts the lives of children, families, volunteers, and staff has become a reality. The relationships developed through New Haven Reads, the achievements made by the children, and the dedication of the families are truly unforgettable. I believe all of these things together make New Haven Reads the fabulous organization it is today. I am blessed beyond words to have been able to work with everyone sharing the joy and power of reading!

While I am sad to be leaving, I am thrilled to say that Hayley Herrington has accepted the position of Education Director and will assume the role on September 1st. Hayley has worked alongside me at New Haven Reads for the past two years, and I know there is no one better suited, qualified, or ready to take over the position. In addition, Asia Gillespie has accepted the position of Assistant Education Director. Asia has been with New Haven Reads in the capacity of Assistant Site Director and Site Director. I know these two ladies will be a dynamic team, serving the New Haven Reads community with their knowledge and dedication.

I am excited about the opportunities that await us in California, while I look forward to hearing about all of the things that New Haven Reads will continue to accomplish in the future. Whenever I am in Connecticut, I will be sure to visit! Until then, please know that the New Haven Reads community will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

With much love,

Tanya Smith
Education Director
