Tutoring
Our free after-school tutoring program has become the heart of our activities and we now have over 500 students coming after school and on Saturday afternoons for one or more hours per week by appointment. Our one-on-one tutoring program serves children in grades one through twelve and the students come from schools in New Haven and the surrounding communities.
Our model is straightforward: every student receives at least one hour of one-on-one instruction each week with a dedicated tutor. The program content and volunteer tutors are chosen and monitored by our team, which includes staff members who are certified teachers. We match our students with volunteer tutors from across our community and many of our students have never had anyone work with them one-on-one and they thrive on the experience.
The tutors are diverse and are role models for their students. We provide tutor training throughout the year to communicate teaching strategies and reading goals for each grade level as well as daily feedback from supervisors using the tutee’s lesson notebook. Our Education Director and Parent Liaison provides additional support through meeting with parents to discuss learning strategies, facilitating parent and teacher conferences, and following up with families to ensure that student goals are being achieved or to offer alternative assistance.

Our tutors come from across the community and all of them are committed to helping our students succeed. If you are interested in tutoring, please contact Keri Humphries at (203) 752-1923 or Keri@newhavenreads.org.
If you are interested in tutoring but would prefer not to make a long-term commitment, ask us about being a substitute tutor during the times when our college tutors are away on vacation such as mid-March and during the month of May.
