Results from our recent tutor survey
New Haven Reads thanks the 323 people who responded to the recent tutor survey! Here are some initial results:
Tutors are passionate about literacy and their students. 49.5% of respondents decided to tutor at NHR because NHR’s vision, mission, and goals matched their own. 86% are satisfied with their tutor student pairings, and 90% feel they are making a difference.
Many respondents requested a more detailed breakdown of the tutoring hour, more information on their tutees, and additional tutor training. In response to these survey results, site directors have attached a basic breakdown of the tutoring hour to each student file. Additionally, results of the recent CORE assessment will soon be in all 1st and 3rd graders’ files, encouraging and equipping tutors to work on specific skills.
We are planning five training sessions for next year – three specific skills trainings with Wendy North and two general tutor trainings for new volunteers. Site directors and all NHR staff are also always available to help tutors discover more ways to get to know their students, whether through interest inventories, high interest books, or conversations with parents.
New Haven Reads is grateful to those who shared effective strategies for additional volunteer recruitment. We are currently increasing our presence in community events. Outreach Coordinator Keri Humphries will also be contacting everyone who asked to know about additional opportunities to help out at NHR—watch for her email!
Over the next few months we will continue to analyze all of the qualitative data and compile a full report. Tutor feedback is always welcome as we seek to share the joy and power of reading. Thank you!
