NEW HAVEN, CONN. Oct. 3, 2017 – New Haven Reads is honored to announce it has received a $20,000 grant from United Way of Greater New Haven. These funds will represent a second year of funding through the School Age Youth Grant Program and will support the one-on-one literacy tutoring program.

“This grant will support our largest program which transforms outcomes for our students,” said Kirsten Levinsohn, Executive Director at New Haven Reads. “We are so excited to be working with United Way of Greater New Haven in efforts to improve literacy in our community.”

The one-on-one tutoring program sees over 500 students coming after school and on Saturdays for one or more hours per week registered. The program serves children in grades one through twelve who are matched with volunteer tutors from across the community. After administering the 2016/2017 Consortium on Reading Excellence (CORE) Test, the results showed 100% of students tested improved in at least one area of reading, and 75% of students tested improved their Independent Reading Level one or more grade levels.
